Government
Government
- Canada has a parliamentary government, like Great Britain.
- Not only is it a parliamentary democracy but it also is a federation and a constitutional monarchy.
- The capital is Ottawa.
- Just like America, Canada has three branches of government; executive, legislative, and judicial branch.
- A parliamentary government is a system in which legislative and executive functions are combined in a legislature called parliament.
- The Prime Minister is the major party's leader in parliament and the current Prime Minister of Canada is Stephen Harper.
- Parliament handles all legislative maters and consists of an appointed Senate and an Elected House of Commons.
- Each of the ten provinces of Canada has its own legislature and prime minister.
Industry
Industry:
- Traditionally Canada's industry depended mostly on trade.
- In recent times its industry is transportation, equipment, chemicals, processed and unprocessed minerals, food products, wood and paper products, petroleum, and natural gas.
- Canada has become a leading exporter of oil.
- It's primary industries are farming, logging, mining and farming.
- Farming is a small percentage of Canada's industry because only about 5% of all of Canada's land is suitable for farming.
- However, Canada is a leader in the production of newsprint, paper made from wood pulp, because of its vast forests, and mining too because of Canada's extensive mineral deposits.
- Fishing is also a primary industry, since it has three ocean coastlines, the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic.
Leisure Activities
Leisure Activities
- Canadians love to do many different things in their free time such as ice hockey, skating, skiing, fishing, golf, football, and baseball.
- The Canadian love of sports comes from its native people, who invented the game of lacrosse, and then also to the European settlers who developed ice hockey.
- They also have multiple holidays, but their two annual events are the Quebec Winter Carnival, held in Quebec, and the Calgary Stampede.
- In the Quebec Winter Carnival the participants get to experience snow baths, night parades, snow sculpture contests, snow slides, giant fooseball, shows, sleigh rides, skating and much more.
- It is held from January 30 to February 15.
- The Calgary Stampede is like the rodeos in Texas and across the US.
- There are booths to play at, food to buy, roller coasters to ride, and rodeos and animals to watch.
